Does Your Skin Look Older Than You?

There comes a day when that person looking back at you in the miror has grown older. Two factors contribute to negative changes in our skin as we advance from one decade to another:  Natural aging and sun damage.  Each individual is unique and may experience some or all of these changes in varying degrees. Beautiful skin is possible by making good choices for your skin.  Eating a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, water and healthy oils(such as polyunsaturated fats, essential fatty acids found in flax seed oil, olive oil, etc.) all help in achieving and maintaining healthy skin.  Vitamins and supplements customized to promote good skin health are important. Adequate rest, sleep, and excercise also contribute significantly to beautiful skin. One should avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption to promote not only good skin health but, general health as well.

The following outlines imperfections that can occur in various age groups and the selection of non-surgical technologies that can diminish or eradicate these conditions and restore a healthy, youthful look to your skin at any age!

HELPFUL INFORMATION:
The skin you were born with was smooth, soft, flawless and firm.  Time, heredity, hormones, sun and stress all take their toll on the body's largest organ--the skin.  Don't despair, skin can be healthy again, as there are many ways to care for aging skin.

Wrinkle Prevention
While we cannot reverse every possible cause of wrinkling, there are steps we can take to minimize the aging process:

Avoid excessive sun exposure, including sun lamps and tanning beds. Ultraviolet exposure is greatest between 10am and 4pm. Use sunscreens in combination with other sun-protective measures.

Quit Smoking. Smoking not only increases perioral wrinkles (wrinkling around the mouth) but also places you at a higher risk for skin cancer.

Lead a healthy lifestyle. This includes a balanced healthy diet, adequate water intake, daily exercise, and stress reduction.

Daily skin care should consist of mild cleansing of the face daily, application of a moisturizer, and daily sunscreen use.

Rosacea/Facial Redness
Rosacea is a common condition— approximately 14 million Americans are affected by rosacea; most of those who suffer from it have never even heard of it. Both men and women are at risk, particularly those between the ages of 30-50 who have fair skin and blush easily.

Rosacea can cause redness, bumps and/or swelling, especially on the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin and can look similar to acne. Unlike acne, however, people with rosacea don't get blackheads but do get dilated blood vessels (called telangiectasias).

Rosacea is a chronic condition and rarely resolves without treatment. Mild rosacea can be limited to mild redness of the cheeks. However, in the most severe forms, the skin overlying the nose can become permanently swollen and red (called rhinophyma) because of dilated blood vessels and abnormal enlargement of oil glands. Other potential symptoms of rosacea include eye irritation (burning, stinging, grittiness, and/or dryness) and styes.

Facial Capillaries
New advances in laser and light technology now permit the safe and effective removal of small, spider-like veins on the face and nose called telangiectasias. These veins are caused by the aging process, overexposure to the sun, hormones, and genetics.

Most people feel that these capillaries detract from their appearance. With the laser and light treatments available today, dramatic improvement in the facial capillaries can be obtained.

Brown Spots & Pigmentation
Age spots are also known as sun spots, liver spots, lentigos, or lentigines. These lesions are flat, tan, brown, or dark brown spots on sun-exposed skin. As people age, sun spots most commonly appear on the backs of the hands, the forearms, neck, chest, and face. Sun spots are associated with cumulative sun exposure. The pigment producing cells in the skin (called melanocytes) are activated to produce more pigment (melanin) by ultraviolet rays. While these spots are not themselves cancerous, you may be at risk for skin cancer if you have them.

Any dark spot that is either new or changing should be evaluated by a dermatologist.

Acne
Acne not only affects teenagers, but can also be seen frequently in 20 and 30 year olds as well. Oily skin is often a contributing factor.

Acne is characterized by pimples and occasionally by red bumps and cysts. Heredity plays a significant role in the severity of acne.

Proper care of the skin and the use of the correct skin products can help make a significant difference in the control of acne. Patients should consult with a physician if  they cannot achieve full clearing of acne on their own.

Uncontrolled acne can eventually cause facial scarring in some patients.

A healthy lifestyle and a good skin care regimen, coupled with a few preventative or corrective measures using the latest technologies, will help make your skin radiant.  Aesthetic Clinique has experts in a medical setting
